Q&A With Actress Ashley Leggat
May 22, 2013
This was one of the cool interviews. If you didn't have at least a small crush on Ashley growing up, you didn't watch The Disney Channel. After seeing these answers, we were all justified in our crushes. Come on, the woman likes dirty jokes, has sports knowledge, her favorite rapper is Eminem, she's... Well, I won't ruin the interview, but she is pretty awesome - and has some cool stuff on the horizon. Also, I don't know if I have permission to call her "Ash"...But I went for it.
[image of Life With Derek] Remember this show? It used to come on back when Disney aired things that you wanted to watch?
NYPN: Personally, I followed you on Twitter after seeing "The Perfect Roommate," but, I first remember seeing you in "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen," and Obviously, everyone knows you from hit Disney show, "Life with Derek." When you are walking around Toronto do you get stopped a lot? NOT JUST because you are pretty, but do people realize it is you? Hopefully, they yell "Hey Ashley!" not "Hey Casey!"...right?
Ash: First off, you are smooth working a compliment into the question...love it. To answer your question, yes I get stopped quite a bit. Mostly from Life with Derek, and mostly teen/young adults. I get "Hey you're that girl from TV!" or "Ashley, can you please say 'DER-EK!!!'" or "ASHLEYYY!"... all are perfectly acceptable.
NYPN: Correct us if we're wrong, but you have worked with Hilary Duff (Cadet Kelly), Megan Fox AND Lindsey Lohan (Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen) right? Who was your favorite to work with? Those had to be fun, or interesting, sets?
Ash: You are correct, I have worked with all three. My favorite hands-down was Megan. She is without a doubt one of the funniest people I have ever met, and has a dry sense of humor and dirty jokes... Both of which, I thoroughly enjoy.
NYPN: We got the idea for this Q&A while watching the Criminal Minds marathon today - there you were in the middle of the action. How cool of an experience was that?
Ash: Criminal Minds was an amazing experience, because I have been a huge fan of the show for as long as it has been on. When I left for LA, I told my friends that my main goal was to get on that show, and God willing, I did! Also, Shemar Moore picked me up my first day on set, so it's safe to say my year was pretty much made from that moment on.
NYPN: You have been all over the place: you sing, dance, act, you've been on stage, you've been on set; the whole nine yards. What is your favorite place to be? Do like being Baby in "Dirty Dancing" or Casey from "Life with Derek?"... just as an example.
Ash: Tough question... I love theatre because every single night is an exciting adventure with a million things that could go wrong, and the biggest sense of accomplishment is when you see that the audience loved your performance. Definitely keeps you on your toes, and there wasn't one performance of Dirty Dancing playing Baby that I didn't get goosebumps all over my body when Johnny and I did 'the lift.' Where as with TV and film, you have a little more leniency and a lot more takes to get it just right. Playing Casey was exciting because I literally grew up at the same time as she did, and the story lines were always changing, keeping it very interesting. Both are amazing to me, but if I HAD to pick one, TV.
NYPN: You're a sports girl we understand, which makes sense growing up in a house full of older brothers, not to mention marrying (sad day for rest of the male race), a professional hockey player, Jeremy Williams. Baseball season is in full-swing and the NHL playoffs are going on too. Got any teams you are pulling for? (Sorry we HAD to put the OLD cheerleading picture!!)
Ash: Yes, I love sports. Growing up with four athletic brothers, I just had to marry one myself. FUN FACT: I played on the girls touch football team in high school...and I have a sick arm. Back to the question, NHL - rooting for Ottawa since it's the only Canadian team left, and if that fails, let's go Red Wings. As for baseball, Toronto Blue Jays - home town pride.
NYPN: You're staring in a new movie that airs this Friday on Lifetime, "The Perfect Boss," correct? Tell us about it. Is it a spin off "The Perfect Roomate" and how did this project come about?
Ash: "The Perfect Boss" airs on Lifetime this Friday @ 8E/9P, and I'm really excited about it. It's a great movie and will keep you on the edge of your seat. It isn't a spin off of The Perfect Roommate at all, but it is filmed by the same people, and that's how I got involved in the project. It's my third project with the company, and I love working with them.
NYPN: Trying not to give too much a spoiler away...but you play Rennee, a pre-med student who is trying to uncover a covered up murder, tell us about this character and why you liked her (assuming you liked her, of course).
Ash: I always have to like the person I play! Renee connected with me, because she's a girl who can get straight A's in school, and stay out until 3am partying. No matter what, she is business first, but still allows herself to have fun (which is how I'd describe myself). Renee goes through a life-changing moment when she loses her father, and has to grow up in that moment, becoming the one person who can get to the bottom of what really happened to him. She's pretty determined and not scared to get her hands dirty, which sums me up well.
NYPN: Just because we are bored and like putting people on the spot, Ashley Leggat is stranded on an island with her iPad. It can only have 3 songs and 2 movies on it. What are you going with!?
Songs: "Oops, I did it Again" (Britney Spears) because I have loved Britney since the start - even through the 'shaving of the head' episode.
"Mockingbird" (Eminem) because he is a musical genius and I truly believe that I rap it ALMOST as good as Em does.
"Summer Lovin" (Grease) because I'd be pretty bored on a deserted island, so I would put on elaborate performances where I played both Sandy & Danny to entertain myself.
"Dirty Work" (Norm MacDonald) because it's my favorite movie ever.
"SNL Best of Will Ferrell," because I always need more cowbell in my life.
Ash: I can't think of anything else to add, but thank you for picking some interesting questions!! It's always way more fun to answer these, than the usual same old ones!
