The website is called myspace.com but Hamilton actress Ashley Leggat learned that it wasn't her space. She was surprised to discover that other people were passing themselves off as her on the popular Internet site. Leggat's burgeoning fame is coming on the strength of her TV show, Life With Derek, that has been airing on the Disney Channel in the States and starts tomorrow on Family Channel in Canada at 6:30 p.m.
"One of my friends called me and said, 'Go look on the Internet,' and there were like girls pretending to be me," Leggat told The Hamilton Spectator. "And it's so funny the things they say because they don't really know too much about me but that 'I live in L.A. and I love to shop and blah blah blah.' And I'm just like, wow, these people. I don't get it. I mean it's really flattering but ... I would definitely not explain myself as, 'I love to shop.'"
Leggat is wrapping up her second season of filming in Toronto this week and has one more year on her contract with the half-hour comedy show in which she costars with Michael Seater (ReGenesis) as headstrong stepbrother and stepsister pair who constantly butt heads over just about everything. The starring role is the latest notch on Leggat's belt. The 19-year-old St. Thomas More graduate, who has enjoyed more than a dozen TV roles, rose to prominence two years ago with a key role in the Lindsay Lohan film, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. That helped her land a co-starring role in the NBC/Discovery Kids show Darcy's Wildlife and a part in the Joe Mantegna /Jean Smart CBS- TV movie, A Very Married Christmas. Leggat has been involved in entertainment since age two when mom Patty enrolled her in dancing school. She eventually branched out into singing and acting, a move that has helped make her more appealing to casting agents as "a triple threat."
University plans are on hold for the moment while her career develops but Leggat says she definitely plans to continue her education with an eye on a degree in English. Leggat loves being part of the Life With Derek cast and says the show is like having a second family, something she appreciates because she has set up home alone in Toronto in an apartment. And she also likes the acting required for her part as Casey, the stepsister. "I played the villain on Darcy's Wild Life and now I'm playing the nerd in Life With Derek," she said, adding, "Well, not a nerd, I take that back. It's just that when they have an overview of the show, Darcy is the cool kid and I am the uncool kid. I do have my moments where I try to do something that makes me cooler but they end up backfiring. I think it's easier to play the villain because there's no going too far with being the villain. Your job is to make people hate you. But Casey has a lot more depth." Leggat said she won't have much time off when filming ends because the producers want to start soon on the third season.
"After that, I will be out of a contract and will have to see if we do more. I will probably go to L.A. for a bit," she said. She is also up for a movie that could film this summer with Sarah Polley. "It takes a lot of patience," Leggat said about a career in acting. "For every role I do get, there are 100 that I don't get. It really is kind of hard. You start at the bottom and you can see yourself as number 40 on the cast list and it's a long way up. My first role I probably had two lines and I was so excited and now I am a lead in a series and have a feature film under my belt.
It takes a lot of time and a lot of hard work and I am really proud of it," she said. And now shealso does have her own space on the Internet at myspace.com/ashleyleggatonline. "My brother was so unhappy that people were pretending to be me (that) he made an official fan site," Leggat said with a laugh. "Now people can go and check out that and it's all real stuff."
